The Seven Shape Categories
Round
Equal fullness top and bottom. Most balconette and plunge styles work well without extra adjustment.
Teardrop / Bell
Slightly fuller on the bottom with a softer slope on top. Full-coverage and demi cups tend to fit best.
East-West
Nipples point outward rather than forward. A balconette or plunge with side support helps center things.
Side-Set
Space between the breasts with fullness on the outer sides. A plunge or center-gore-forward style helps.
Athletic
Wider chest with less natural projection. Molded cups add shape without needing much room.
Relaxed
More fullness at the bottom with a gentle natural slope. Full-coverage with good under-band support works well.
Asymmetric
One side noticeably different from the other. Extremely common. Fit to your larger side and consider a style with removable pads to even things out.

Shape Can Change
Weight, age, and pregnancy can all shift shape over time. It’s worth rechecking this periodically rather than assuming it’s fixed for life.
Round
Equal fullness above and below the nipple line. Most balconette, plunge, and demi styles work well without needing to compensate for one direction being fuller than the other.
Teardrop / Bell
Slightly fuller on the bottom with a softer slope on top. Full-coverage and demi cups tend to fit better than styles that assume equal top-and-bottom fullness.
East-West
Nipples point outward rather than forward. A balconette or plunge with side support helps center and hold shape better than styles without side structure.
Side-Set
Noticeable space between the breasts with fullness toward the outer sides. A plunge or center-gore-forward style helps draw things toward the center.
Athletic
A wider chest with less natural forward projection. Molded cups add shape without requiring extra room the body doesn’t need.
Relaxed
More fullness at the bottom with a gentle natural slope. Full-coverage styles with strong under-band support tend to work best.
Asymmetric
One side is noticeably different from the other. Extremely common, not unusual. Fitting to the larger side and using a removable-pad style evens things out without needing two different bra sizes.

Shape Categories in More Depth
Round means roughly equal fullness top and bottom. Teardrop/bell has a softer slope with slightly more fullness at the bottom.
East-west describes nipples pointing outward rather than forward. Side-set means noticeable space between the breasts.
Athletic describes a wider chest with less natural projection. Relaxed describes a gentle downward slope with fuller lower volume.
Asymmetric means one side differs noticeably from the other. Extremely common, not unusual.
How Shape Can Change Over Time
Weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and aging can all shift shape independently of size. Someone might stay the same band and cup size for years while their shape category changes, which is a completely normal part of how bodies evolve.
Why We Don’t Rank Shapes as Better or Worse
Every shape category described here is simply a description of tissue distribution, not a hierarchy. There’s no shape that’s more correct or more desirable than another. The only reason to know your shape is that it helps you shop more efficiently, by pointing you toward constructions that are more likely to fit well on the first try.
Shape Categories Are a Communication Tool
Knowing your shape category also makes it easier to search for style recommendations elsewhere or describe your needs to a fitter, even outside this site.
Shape Isn’t a Fixed, Permanent Category
Weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and age can all shift which shape category best describes you over time. It’s worth revisiting this occasionally rather than assuming your shape from years ago is still the most accurate description.
Shapes Can Coexist
Many people don’t fit neatly into just one shape category. A mix of two descriptions (say, slightly asymmetric and slightly east-west) is completely normal and doesn’t mean the categories are wrong.
